Housing Minister Visits Hawick Development To Launch Housing Action Plan

Members of our team recently welcomed housing minister Paul McLennan, along with members of the South of Scotland Regional Economic Partnership (REP) to one of our projects in Burnfoot, Hawick.

The visit to the Fairhurst Drive development of 12 new homes which we are delivering for Scottish Borders Housing Association (SBHA), was part of a series of events planned to launch the new South of Scotland Housing Action Plan.

This initiative, spearheaded by the South of Scotland Regional Economic Partnership (REP), aims to address the pressing need for more, diverse housing options in the region. The Action Plan’s launch marks a crucial step in addressing the housing challenges in the South of Scotland.

Julia Mulloy, SBHA Chief Executive and member of the Strategic Action Group on Housing, said: “The Housing Action Plan reflects the vital role that housing plays in a successful economy. SBHA is committed to playing a significant role in the successful implementation of this Action Plan over the next two years and beyond, leveraging our strengths and partnerships to deliver much-needed affordable housing.

“Our ongoing projects in Burnfoot and other locations, exemplify our dedication to improving housing availability and quality in the South of Scotland.”

The first project we have partnered with SBHA on, the development of 16 new build homes sits across two locations – the first at Fairhurst Drive, and the second at Leisham Drive – both in the Burnfoot area of Hawick.

The developments will include a mix of homes tailored for both families and older residents. The homes have been designed to complement the well-established and popular residential area of the town they sit within.

The Fairhurst Drive site will feature 12 homes, including one- and two-bedroom cottage flats with accessibility features, as well as two- and three-bedroom family homes.

The neighbouring development at the town’s Leisham Drive includes four additional three- and four-bedroom family homes, providing vital new opportunities for larger homes within the housing supply in this highly desired location.

Andrew Dallas, projects director of The JR Group, said: “This project has been our first working with Scottish Borders Housing Association in the region and it’s been a fantastic opportunity to be part of such an exciting project in the Burnfoot Community. It is great to see the Action Plan launched to help bring more high quality, sustainable homes to the area.

“It is something we are very passionate about and therefore we are delighted to help SBHA deliver. During the projects, we have called on the expertise of the local area, prioritising working with local suppliers, subcontractors and businesses to ensure that we can create a fantastic mix of homes tailored for families and older residents alike that meets the needs of the community.”

The homes at Fairhurst Drive and Leishman Place are designed to meet a variety of housing needs. Both sites are progressing well, with completion expected in early 2025.
